Description
Ema, a highly qualified lawyer from a small European country, relocates to the United States in search of a better life for her children. She takes a government office job, but her ambitious and resentful assistant manager, Ho, starts a subtle campaign of sabotage. This includes computer tampering, false disciplinary actions, and manipulating colleagues and supervisors. Ema’s efforts to resolve these issues are met with indifference and silence. The story follows Ema’s transformation from a hopeful immigrant to a disillusioned survivor, revealing systemic biases and hidden barriers in the American workplace. Despite the challenges, Ema’s resilience shines through as she leaves the toxic environment to build her legal career elsewhere, showing her strong commitment to her dignity and pursuit of justice. The story emphasizes how Ho’s small acts of sabotage build into a powerful, destructive force. Ema’s eventual resignation is not a defeat but a strategic move that allows her to regain control and chase her dreams outside a system that has failed her. The story concludes with Ema, at sixty years old, studying for the California Bar and exploring AI, refusing to let her past injustices define her future.
